Pedro Burmester releases “Goldberg” Variations

Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations is the latest release by renowned pianist Pedro Burmester, recorded and produced by N Studio Lisbon and released in 2024 by Artway.

Thirty-two years after his first recording for EMI Classics, Burmester returns to one of the most monumental works in the keyboard repertoire — not to revisit it, but to truly inhabit it. This is the interpretation of a musician who no longer needs to prove anything, and who approaches Bach’s architecture with the freedom that only decades of living with a work can bring.

A Work of Extraordinary Depth

Written in 1741 for Count Hermann Karl von Keyserling and performed for him by harpsichordist Johann Gottlieb Goldberg — after whom the work is named — the Goldberg Variations stand as one of the greatest examples of the variation form. The piece opens with an aria, unfolds through thirty variations of remarkable diversity, and closes with a return to the aria, now heard with entirely new meaning.

Beyond its technical complexity, Bach weaves together masterful counterpoint with an almost mathematical precision, producing a work that is as intellectually rigorous as it is emotionally absorbing. The Goldberg Variations remain one of the most demanding challenges a pianist can face — and one of the most rewarding.

A Mature and Deeply Personal Interpretation

In his new recording, each variation assumes its own identity, creating an emotional journey that moves between luminous restraint and profound introspection. As writer Valter Hugo Mãe eloquently put it:

“Pedro Burmester’s ingenious return to the Goldberg Variations is like that of a wise man ready to return home. Bach’s magnificent work now meets the pianist in an interpretation that can only be made by those who have matured and already journey through the musical monument with pure intuition.”

Released on Artway Next, this album is a testament to what it means to return to a great work with new eyes — and to the kind of recording that only becomes possible when artistry, time and the right production come together.
