ABOUT N STUDIO LISBON

About N Studio Lisbon

N Studio Lisbon is a recording and post-production studio specialising in classical, contemporary and jazz music, with a particular focus on immersive formats. Most of our sessions take place where the music belongs — in concert halls, cloisters, churches and auditoriums across Europe — and are edited, mixed and mastered at our rooms on the eastern riverside of Lisbon.

We work with labels, orchestras, festivals, composers and institutions, from pre-production through to the final master. Our catalogue includes releases on Naxos, Harmonia Mundi, KAIROS, Paraty, Odradek, Col legno, Clean Feed and Neu Records.

Recognition

J.S. Bach: The Art of Fugue, performed by Kenneth Weiss on the 1782 Taskin harpsichord of the Museu da Música and released on Paraty, received a Diapason d’Or in 2023. Four albums recorded and produced by our team have won Best Classical Album at the PLAY Awards: Archipelago by Luís Tinoco in 2020, the first PLAY Award ever given to classical music, followed by Lamentos by António Pinho Vargas in 2024, Talkin(g) (A)bout My Generation by Pedro Lima in 2025, and Kokyuu by Luís Tinoco in 2026.

Earlier recognition includes Excepcional from Scherzo and Melómano de Oro from Melómano for E Piano with Alberto Rosado, and a review on BBC Radio 3’s Record Review praising the vividness of the Archipelago recording.

The Engineer

N Studio Lisbon opened in 2018, founded by Hugo Romano Guimarães, a sound engineer and music producer working in classical music recording since 2007. He trained as an audio technician at the Escola Profissional de Música e Artes de Almada, studied harmony, analysis and composition with Eurico Carrapatoso at the Conservatório de Música de Lisboa, and completed a postgraduate degree in Sonology at ESMUC in Barcelona, where he studied recording technique with Pere Casulleres and acoustics with Paul Poletti. He is currently completing a Master’s in Music Production and Sound Technologies at Universidade Lusófona.

From 2007 to 2020 he was a music producer at Catalunya Música, the Catalan classical radio station, recording several hundred concerts at the Palau de la Música Catalana, the Gran Teatre del Liceu, L’Auditori de Barcelona and the region’s principal festivals. Since 2011 he has been audio director at Neu Records in Barcelona, a label dedicated to contemporary music in immersive formats.

Immersive Recording

Immersive recording has been central to this work since 2011, through Neu Records in Barcelona. We record and mix in Dolby Atmos, 7.1.4, surround and binaural formats, and are regularly invited by L’Auditori de Barcelona to record the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona (OBC) in immersive formats, released in 7.1.4 through Naxos.

This work is supported by NIMMA (Neu Immersive Multiformat Microphone Array), a multiformat microphone array developed by Hugo Romano Guimarães from 2015 onwards, in collaboration with array theorist Michael Williams and Dr. Hyunkook Lee of the University of Huddersfield. The system was presented at the 140th AES Convention in Paris in 2016.

Archives and Preservation

Since 2018, N Studio Lisbon has recorded the concerts of the Festival Internacional de Música Pau Casals in El Vendrell, a collaboration that led the Fundació Pau Casals to entrust us with the restoration of its historical sound archive. We have also recorded symphonic, choral and chamber concerts for RTP Antena 2 since 2017.
